Duties and Responsibilities: Perfusionists are vital members of the cardiovascular surgical team because they are responsible for running the heart-lung (cardiopulmonary bypass) machine. The heart-lung machine diverts blood away from the heart and lungs, adds oxygen to the blood, then returns the blood to the body—all without the blood having to go through the heart.
Education: In order to become a Perfusionist you will have to recieve a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, and are required to receive specialized training, in order to meet certification requirements. For some a masters degree might be required in order to sit in the certification training.
